On Friday 5 September 2025, the Islamic College of Brisbane was subject to a vile bomb threat. The bomb threat was a despicable act which has caused great distress to the school community, including to staff, students and family members.
I commend the school community for their response. But no school community should have to endure such an event.
I heard of the impact upon one family who has left a war-torn country to find safety in Australia and has a student in the school. It is heartbreaking.
I remember first visiting the Islamic College of Brisbane soon after being elected in 2019. I was so impressed with the teachers and the students. The students shared their hopes and dreams for the future – ways in which they could contribute to Australia.
Subsequently, I have been honoured to attend many events at the school. I have consistently been impressed with the articulate and thoughtful presentation of the students, supported by their wonderful teachers. I have met many rightly proud parents.
The Islamic College of Brisbane has consistently opened its heart to the broader community. This has included through innovative programmes bringing students of different faiths together – to promote understanding and to build bonds. Now is the time for our community to support the Islamic College of Brisbane.
I await release of the recommendations from Australia’s Special Envoy to Combat Islamophobia. This latest despicable incident underlines the importance of the work of the Special Envoy.
