Media Release – LNP To Fully Implement Recommendations Of Senate Inquiry Into Aircraft Noise

A Liberal National Government will restore fairness, transparency and accountability in the management of aircraft noise.

The LNP has committed to faithfully implement all the recommendations of the 2024 Senate Inquiry into the Impact and Mitigation of Aircraft Noise.

Over the past three years the LNP has engaged with communities closely and listened to the concerns of residents living under Brisbane flight paths.

LNP MPs have taken the community’s concerns to the Parliament, grilling senior managers of the aircraft noise regulator, AirServices Australia on why the Albanese Labor Government has ignored the concerns of communities impacted by aircraft noise.

Labor’s Infrastructure Minister Catherine King refused respectful invitations to meet with community representatives (of the Brisbane Flight Path Community Alliance). Not even showing the respect to write back – delegating staff to do so.

The Senate Inquiry was led and chaired by an LNP Senator, Matt Canavan, and received over 700 submissions – from community members, councils, aviation experts, airlines and airports.

The Inquiry provided an opportunity for residents and communities under flight paths to have their say and provide evidence of how aircraft noise impacts lives.

The inquiry’s recommendations were informed by the weight of evidence received and were supported by all participating LNP senators.

If elected, the LNP will work with regulators AirServices Australia and the Civil Aviation Safety Authority on measures to mitigate aircraft noise by implementing the inquiry’s recommendations.

We will:

  • respect the role of community representatives on consultation forums – compared to Labor which has tightly restricted the items able to be considered at meetings;
  • empower the Aviation Industry Ombudsman to address aircraft noise complaints;
  • prioritise residential noise avoidance;
  • enable continuous descent and continuous ascent operations at all major airports to reduce noise by having planes climb more quickly, avoiding aircraft flying lower than needed; and
  • direct CASA to investigate implementing higher tailwind take-off thresholds.

By implementing the Senate Inquiry recommendations, the LNP will continue to support the long term growth of Australia’s aviation industry while also taking action to protect residents and communities.

LNP candidate for Brisbane, Trevor Evans, said “this could be a game-changer for aircraft noise-impacted areas in Brisbane”.

“The current Greens MP was elected on a promise of fixing this issue. In three years, we have actually gone backwards – and the Albanese Labor Government has been allowed to ignore the legitimate concerns of local residents.”

LNP candidate for Ryan, Maggie Forrest, said “Implementing the recommendations of the Senate inquiry means much better outcomes for people in the western suburbs, particularly making sure that planes won’t be flying low over homes for longer than they need to.”

LNP candidate for the Senate, Stuart Fraser, said “If elected on May 3, I’ll be bringing my own frustration with this issue to the Senate. I live under the flight path and am reminded every 20 minutes of why this is important. The Senate is the place where Air Services and the Federal Department can be held to account and I’ll be putting their feet to the fire if elected.”

The LNP is the only party that can deliver meaningful solutions for aircraft noise affected communities and get Australia back on track.
