Even Faster Internet for Ipswich

Ipswich region residents are set to benefit from NBN upgrades in the suburbs of Brassall, Newtown – providing access to ultrafast broadband.

The upgrades will enable access to the wholesale download speed tier of close to 1 Gbps – allowing 4K streaming on multiple devices concurrently (for gaming) and importantly, faster internet for local businesses and residents working from home.

When customers in the existing fibre-to-the-node (FTTN) footprint in these suburbs order a high-speed plan, NBN Co will provide fibre lead-in to the premises at no up-front cost to the retail service provider. The upgrades will come at no cost to customers until they order an eligible service.

It’s expected customers will be able to order these high-speed plans later this year (subject to offers from retail service providers). The FTTN upgrades are part of NBN’s $4.5bn investment in network upgrades.

Minister for Communications, Urban Infrastructure, Cities and the Arts, Paul Fletcher said homes and businesses would be able to access ultrafast internet speeds of up to 1 Gbps (one gigabit per second, otherwise known as 1,000 megabits per second – or blazing fast broadband).

“This is a further step towards delivering on NBN Co’s commitment as part of the $4.5 billion network upgrades announced last year, that two million premises presently on the fibre to the node footprint will be able to order a service of up to 1 Gbps by the end of 2023.” Minister Fletcher said.

In total, NBN Co’s commitment is to make speeds of up to 1 Gbps available to around 8 million premises, or up to 75 per cent of homes and businesses in the fixed line network footprint, by 2023.

Ipswich region Senator Paul Scarr said as well as the benefits faster internet could provide, this investment by NBN Co would provide a boost to economic activity and employment in the local region.

“The start of these works by NBN Co will create jobs for the Ipswich community and support local businesses by allowing them to take advantage of the benefits ultrafast broadband can provide,” Senator Scarr said.
