Media Release – Top Marks Given For New Hymba Yumba Building

A new science and arts building at Hymba Yumba Independent School has been officially opened by Senator Paul Scarr.

The local Senator was thrilled to unveil the concrete and timber building at the Springfield-based Indigenous School.

He also unveiled a plaque in his honour, which has been placed on an artist’s easle .

“This new building will benefit students and staff at Hymba Yumba and give them modern, up-to-date facilities to enjoy and an environment they can thrive in,” Senator Scarr said.

“I am a huge fan of this wonderful school and acknowledge the hard work of the staff in opening the school’s new building.”

It comes after a Federal Government grant of $800,000 was awarded to the school in 2020. The Capital Grants Program provided funding for non-government schools to improve capital infrastructure.

“I congratulate Hymba Yumba on their new building, which is one of thousands of schools across the nation to benefit from the grants program,” Senator Scarr said.

“Education is so important and I am proud the Morrison Government is providing world-class learning facilities.”

Hymba Yumba operations manager Brad Strong said the new building would make an enormous difference to the school, with one new science classroom and, for the first time, an art classroom.

“This building will be used by up to 300 students from year 3 to year 12,” Mr Strong said.

“We’ve never had an art classroom before – it will add colour but also life and a new sense of creativity to the school.

“We are most grateful for, and indebted to, the support of our Federal Government.”
