I extend my deepest sympathies and support to the Nepalese Australian community following recent tragic events in Nepal.
During the so called “Gen Z” protests against a social media ban and corruption, 19 people have been killed. Hundreds more have been injured. Many are young people. It has caused great distress to our Nepalese Australian community.
These events are heartbreaking and deeply concerning. The right to peaceful assembly and freedom of expression are fundamental democratic values.
I note that the Australian embassy joined the embassies of six other nations in issuing a statement which said:
Our governments reaffirm our strong support for the universal rights of peaceful assembly and freedom of expression. We urge all parties to exercise maximum restraint, avoid further escalation, and ensure that these fundamental rights are protected.
I note that UN Human Rights spokesperson Ravina Shamdasani said in a statement:
We have received several deeply worrying allegations of unnecessary or disproportionate use of force by security forces during protests organized by youth groups demonstrating against corruption and the recent Government ban on social media platforms.
I stand in solidarity with our wonderful Nepalese Australian community during these difficult times. Please know that your contribution to Australia is deeply respected and treasured.
Now is the time for all Australians to provide comfort and support to our Nepalese Australian community.
